The importance of a morning routine

I just flicked through my five-minute journal where I listed every morning three things I am grateful for. And I noticed that over the last weeks I almost every (!) morning wrote that I’m grateful for my morning routine. So I thought it might be worth to write a blog post about it.

I love my morning routine because it wakes me up in a very gentle way and leaves me energised and fresh for the day. It is the time of the day that is reserved for myself. For checking in. Nourishing myself. Centering myself. And probably the best thing about it is, that it rescues me from completely crashing the ground on a bad hair day.

So what is the secret of a good morning routine?

It makes you feel better

Each day we are in a different condition when we wake up. Sometimes we are eager to start the day, sometimes not. Sometimes our body feels rested and energised after a couple of hours sleep, sometimes not. However you feel, the goal of your morning routine should be that you feel better after you have completed it.

It fits into your time schedule

A good morning routine fits into your time schedule. Don’t try to do too much in too little time. The least thing you want is to rush through your morning routine.

It is simple

Don’t try to get too fancy when it comes to your morning routine. Remember, your morning routine should also (or especially) be suitable for the days when you would prefer to stay in bed.

It covers all your needs to get you ready for the day

What do you need to get ready for the day? Your morning routine should cover everything. From making your bed, to having a shower, making a cup of tea, preparing breakfast, tidying up the mess and so on. Think of everything you need to get you ready for the day and include it in your morning routine.

It includes at least one gift to yourself

Make sure that you include at least one activity in your morning routine that feels like a small gift to yourself. It might be that you gift yourself 20 minutes yoga every day. Or you play a song on your guitar. You might take the time to brew a nice cup of chai which you enjoy in silence. You might treat yourself to a meditation or lit a candle and say some mantras. You might go for a short walk breathing in the fresh air. Or you might give yourself the time to continue reading a chapter in the novel that you are currently reading. What ever it is that makes you feel good. Include it in your morning routine and celebrate it as a gift to yourself!

It is repetitive

Well, I guess the word routine already speaks for itself. But I would like to emphasise the importance that you make sure your morning routine really becomes a routine. My morning routine helps me to start the day in a good way independently of how I feel when I wake up and is especially important for the days when I wake up with little energy. Because my morning routine has become a routine I don’t have to think about anything. I just get up and add one step after the other until the routine is completed. And because I spent some time to find the perfect morning routine for myself I feel better after I have completed it. It includes many simple activities that nourish me on all different levels of my being. It helps me to raise my vibration and clear some sluggish energy before I start my day. And believe me…if it was not a routine I wouldn’t do it on a bad hair day. It has to become as naturally as brushing your teeth.

Some inspiration, please?

I am happy to share some very simple tools that I include in my morning routine in some of my next blog posts.

  1. Great topic! I wish I was capable to establish a routine, I am generally really bad with routines and have to write them down in detail. I am curious for your exact routine steps and how much time you spend on them. Until then, I’ll stay hopeful 😉🙋🏼‍♀️💫
